Bail Out 2010

May 28, 2010

Bail Out 2010

Whitelion's fifth annual award winning Whitelion Bail Out was held at the Old Melbourne Gaol Crime and Justice Precinct on Friday 28th May, 2010.

The Bail Out event, which raised approximately $235,000, concluded a week of activities including the inaugural Youth Justice Forum 'Bail them Out or Lock them Up' and School's Bail Out challenge.

The highlight of the week is undoubtedly the 130 inmates submitting themselves to an evening of incarnation in which a minimum of $1,000 must be raised before their release to the official Parole Party.

Some of this year's highlights included:

  • A record number of inmate registrations and online fundraisers;
  • Court room drama featuring radio broadcaster and lawyer Jon Faine;
  • Over 30 actors role playing police, prison guards and rogue inmates;
  • Live Music from Cam McGlinchey & Co.;
  • Special guest appearance by Natalie Bassingthwaighte;
  • Silent Disco!
  • Swing dancers, tap dancers, burlesque performances, fire dancers, belly dancers, acrobats; and
  • Attractions such as blackjack competitions, cartoonist, Temp tatoos, tarot card reading and more!

New to 2010, fundraising inmates had the option of joining gangs (teams of four) or squads (groups of 10+) in order to reach Bail and we had terrific representation from companies such as KFC, Bovis Lendlease, NAB, Waivestar, AAR, City West Water, Alex Karr, Minter Ellison, ATO, bwired plus more.

Upon arrival, inmates were fingerprinted and photographed before being fed tasty prison gruel (soup), bread rolls and water.

The notorious Glenn 'Dog' Manton and Marney 'Chief Warden' McQueen were on the look-out for any inmate stepping out of line and punishment was severe.

After splitting into groups the inmates went on an interactive experience of the justice system featuring interrogations, parole hearings and even an interesting take on prison aerobics.

Inmates then faced a formidable judiciary with Chief Magistrate Ian Gray and Chief County Court Judge Michael Rozenes taking part along with radio broadcaster and lawyer, Jon Faine.

After spending some cell time in which some final pledges and donations were sought the record amount of inmates were released to over 250 guests next door at the official Parole Party.

Meanwhile, Parole Party guests were enjoying an electric array of live music, roving entertainment and podium performers throughout the night. The night concluded with the official announcement of monies raised - $235,000 - before guests danced the night away.

We depend heavily on the goodwill of everyone to ensure Bail Out is the success it is every year. Whitelion wishes to acknowledge and thank key event partners Metlink, National Trust of Australia (VIC), Audio Visual Dynamics, Marekai, Harts, ckaos, bwired, Fosters, Yarrawood, Waivestar, KFC, Direct Mail Solutions, Trent McCarthy & Associates and the Sunday Herald Sun.

We are also grateful for the contribution of so many staff, volunteers and supporters with a special thanks to; Brian Barrows, Kiri Pedersen, Cam McGlinchey, Glenn Manton, Marney McQueen, Sean DeCourcy, Simon Dalton, Alex Messina, John Stock, Megan Ryan, Daryl Johnson, Katchya Ilnyckyi, Campbell Wilson, Alex Nestorovski, Paul Dobson, Kirsten Egan, Stephen Campbell, Michael Klim, Bianca Chatfield, Stuart Appleby, George McEncroe, Matt Thompson, Mark Holden and the many many more than played a role.

Driver education and training for young people in SA

Apr 10, 2010

web_Right_Turn.gifWhitelion South Australia is set to launch a driver education program, 'Right Turn', for young Indigenous people, in partnership with Adelaide based Indigenous program Wiltanendi. The Program is made possible by the donation of a vehicle for the use of the young people, who will be matched with experienced volunteers to enable them to obtain their Learners Licence, or who need to build up their log book hours to obtain their Probationary Licence.

Many young people that Whitelion work with do not have the access to family support or a vehicle to enable them to acquire the necessary skills and driving hours necessary to obtain a licence. 'Right Turn' is a valuable follow-up to Whitelion's successful Rare View Program, run last year by Motorvate at the old Virginia Raceway. The aim of 'Right Turn' is to build on young people's driving skills as the Program diversifies and attracts the necessary funding to accommodate young people in Out-of-Home care.

RAMP Program participants walk Pitt Lane

Mar 25, 2010

web_Pitt_lane.jpgVictorian Mentoring Program, RAMP, enjoyed a day out on 25 March at the Australian Grand Prix where young people and their mentors had prime seating along Pitt Lane at the prestigious Paddock Club. Taking part in Children's Day, RAMP participants were treated to a catered lunch, a magic show and autograph signings by V8 Supercar driver Greg Murphy.

The highlight of the day almost didn't happen - as they were jostled by the large crowd, the young people found themselves standing next to Formula 1 star, and Grand Prix champion Jenson Button in the VIP area.

Whitelion would like to thank Lisa Addison at the Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet for organising this unforgettable experience for the young people.

Bendigo Community Graffiti Day

Feb 27, 2010

web_Bendigo_Graffiti_2010_016_portraite.JPG

Bendigo mentors and young people met at Nandos to fuel up before their community graffiti day on Saturday 27th February. After filling up on chicken and salads, the crew headed up the road to the St Lukes Forest Street office where they had the opportunity to showcase their artistic talents. Some people chose to work with stencils and got to cutting out, while others preferred to freehand. The canvases were quickly taken up with splashes of colour and designs. At the end of the day there were paint covered hands, fabulous works and a new mentor match to boot.

Community days are an integral component of Whitelion Mentoring Programs, as they offer young people the chance to meet and get to know a range of mentors and other young people. These experiences provide great opportunities for socialising, hanging out with positive role models, and enjoying activities which some may not otherwise have experienced.

A huge thank you goes to Nandos and a dedicated store team for their amazing support in making the day a success for all.

Victorian Employment Program Kicking Goals

Feb 18, 2010

employment.JPG

On the 18th February the Victorian Employment Program was audited by Pitcher Partners. The team received very positive feedback and gained the highest score of five for their work practices. This holds the Program in the 95th percentile when it comes to service delivery, one of the highest for any organisation currently working in the sector in Victoria. A fantastic achievement and even better outcome for the young people it supports with training and job opportunities.

We'd like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in the Whitelion Employment Program - young people, business partners, workplace buddies and Whitelion staff. A big cheer to you all... keep up the great work!

If you are interested in finding out more about how you can get involved with Whitelion by becoming an employer, please contact Jeff Hamilton on 03 9389 4420.

Kylie's Memoirs from Onboard the Tall Ship

Feb 05, 2010

web_Voyage_0210_Day4_119.jpgMy name is Kylie, I'm 24 and recently got the privilege of going on the One and All. It is an amazing experience.

You learn how to help sail the One and All, for example navigate, learn the sails, the lines to the sails and you even get to steer the boat. But you also learn new things about your self. I learned to work with younger people and built up my self confidence. I met amazing people and by the end of the trip they felt like family. You do have a fair bit to learn when it comes to the boat but when you're on there you're amazed at how easy it is to learn everything.

But it's not just all hard work!

You see so many dolphins, I thought I wasn't going to see any but I lost count. We even got to see a shark only meters away from the boat.

web_Voyage_0210_Day2_126.jpgOne thing that I amazed myself with is I climbed aloft (aloft is up were the sails are) all the way to the top, I achieved something that I never thought I would do. Its amazing sailing along and your up there and you can see everything. I was so scared and I did it and no one could have taken that moment away from me.

Another thing you learn out there is goals and how to achieve them. You set some goals for while you're on the boat and try your hardest to achieve them and you will because you have great people pushing and supporting you. I achieved the goals I set and beyond them.

Our trip took us to kangaroo island where they anchor down and we go on the beach and play group activities, some challenging but some really fun. These activities help you to progress in team work.

web_Voyage_0210_Day3_067.jpgWe also anchored down at Oyster Bay which is along the York peninsula, and we got time to go swimming of the boat. We got to swing off a rope into the water and jump of the jiboom (the jiboom is what most people seem to call the big stick off the front of the boat).

I had the time of my life on the One and All. I've brought home great memories and new skills that I can use in everyday life like the team work, communication, achieving goals and so much more.

If you get the opportunity to experience the One and All, take in what you learn and you will amaze your self.

Geelong Community Unites to Support Local Youth.

Jan 01, 2010

web_Geelong_Chrissie_Party_09_084.jpgEach year at Christmas, Whitelion looks for a venue to host a function for young people involved in the Geelong Leaving Care Mentoring program. The venue needs to be local, and be a place that young people from diverse backgrounds can come together and feel comfortable and welcome. And Cafe Go was the perfect place.

The proprietor of Cafe Go had spotted an advertisement for Whitelion mentors, and invited Whitelion Geelong to be part of their annual Christmas Dinner for disadvantaged young people.

The support from Cafe Go did not stop with Christmas dinner - thanks to Cafe Go staff lobbying local businesses for gifts, each Young Person attending also received a gift of movie tickets and other vouchers.

Christmas is often a time when disadvantaged young people feel alone and abandoned. It was heart-warming to see how much enjoyment the young people got from coming together to share a special meal, and to hear how much they valued the support shown to them by their local community.

2009 Young Lions Graduate in Style

Dec 02, 2009

The Young Lions Graduation was held on 2nd December 2009 at a lovely venue provided by program sponsor McConnell Dowell. The Young Lions arrived looking stunning and feeling very nervous.

The evening began with lovely finger food and an opportunity for the Young Lions to introduce their friends and family. The room was displayed with photos of the all the camps the Young Lions attended, some artwork they had made throughout the year and t-shirts designed for the camps.

For the Senior Young Lions this was their final year in the program and they will be moving on to bigger and better opportunities, some have finished studying and would like to travel, some have aspirations to find employment and others will be taking some time out after working very hard over the last two years. For the others, this is their first year of Young Lions completed, and they are extremely excited about moving onto becoming 'seniors' next year.

The night continued with a lovely display of the National Camp footage with lots of laughs and even some tears, the footage ended with some farewell messages to the Senior Young Lions. It was then time for the Young Lions to receive their certificates, presented by Colorado Chairman Bob Dalziel. This moment was a proud time for all, especially the Young Lions, and Whitelion staff. The evening ended with all enjoying a nice warm night spent on the balcony taking lots of photos, to a farewell celebration.

Beechworth and Rutherglen Secondary Schools Rock to the Beat

Dec 01, 2009

The Primal Beats Drumming Program in Beechworth and Rutherglen has finished on a very rocking note. Last week students from both secondary schools performed concerts at lunchtime. Beechworth performed an awesome drumming gig with local rapper Josh Lovett. The students loved the performance and also enjoyed Melbourne musician and ROAR Role Model Arik Blum belting out a couple of songs on guitar along with Travis Demsey on the drums.

Rutherglen Secondary had a lunchtime gig called 'Jam Sandwich'. Not only did the drumming performance pull the crowds but two popular bands from the school played gigs also. The drumming performance not only included local rapper Josh but Eli a local Beat Boxer also worked in with the drumming performance.

web_Primal_Beats.JPGBoth schools would like to continue with the program and the student's feedback was one of confidence and amazement at how good their drumming skills had become. The majority of participants stated that they felt more confident as a result of the workshops and that the Primal Beats facilitator Travis Demsey inspired them to take on new challenges " Just from hearing about Travis's childhood and how he was able to do something he loved for a job is great" one student commented. All the students involved stated that there was nothing that didn't like about the workshops except that it finished.

Primal Beats facilitator Travis Demsey said the program is not just about drumming "My aim is not to necessarily teach kids drumming, it's about the power of believing in yourself and following your dreams whilst understanding that we all will face and overcome obstacles in our lives". The workshop owes its success to the support of the Local School Focused Youth Services, Indigo Shire and in particular Brendan Ryder who organised the workshop with Primal Beats.

New ambassador for Whitelion Tasmania

Nov 18, 2009

Sam Cawthorn, Tasmanian 2009 Young Australian Of The Year, has joined Whitelion as Ambassador in Tasmania. Sam is excited to be representing Whitelion and assisting us to promote our work with vulnerable young people in the State.

th_sam_photo03_small.jpgSam grew up as a country farm boy in a family of 11 children. He then went on to college in Hobart Tasmania, but found that he was more suited to get straight into work. After working in sales for a few years he worked as a Workplace Trainer and Assessor and soon became Training Manager. During this time he was involved in many music theatre productions and opened his own music studio. In recent years, Sam has worked for the Federal Government as an Industry Adviser working with young people and industry groups, identifying skill shortages and providing solutions and strategies for young people entering the workforce.

Sam's personal life journey changed dramatically in October 2006 when he was involved in a major car accident and DIED. Thankfully he was resuscitated but was left with an amputated right arm and now lives with a permanent disability in his right leg. Sam was hospitalised for over five months and confined to a wheelchair for close to a year. It is the story of Sam's remarkable resilience, his mental strength as well as his physical recovery that has amazed and inspired so many Australians and people around the world.

Through overcoming such a tragedy Sam launched his motivational speaking business. Sam is now a highly sought after speaker with audiences of over 50,000 people throughout Australia and overseas. He has been nominated for many awards and more recently won the 2009 Young Australian of the Year for Tasmania.

Sam's message to others is simple? he challenges people to be themselves, believe in themself, find purpose and focus, nurture their creativity, develop resilient and protective behaviours, conquer obstacles such as fear, and set and attain personal goals. In everyway imaginable Sam is a living embodiment of the messages he delivers.

Whitelion dominates the airways for youth mentoring week.

Oct 25, 2009

Youth_Mentoring_Week_logo.gif

Youth Mentoring Week 2009, 25th - 31st of October.

Youth Mentoring Week, is an exciting time for Whitelion's Mentoring Programs. Whitelion represent 9 of the 150 youth mentoring programs across Victoria, and is now one of the largest in the state.  Whitelion enjoys the support and advocacy of the Victorian Youth Mentoring Alliance, whom we are current members of. The VYMA and National Youth Mentoring Alliance have designated 26th October to 1st November as Youth Mentoring Week, and have encouraged and provided support and resources for youth mentoring programs to get together and celebrate the great work that's done in the sector.

Whitelion are celebrating Youth Mentoring Week in a number of ways. On Monday 26th October, Whitelion CEO Mark Watt, and Mentoring Team Leader Allison Trethowan attended the launch of Youth Mentoring Week, a "Celebration of Youth Mentoring" at the Melbourne Zoo, along with representatives of other mentoring programs around the state.

tn_Radio_image_Youth_Mentoring_Week.jpgWhitelion have also been hot in the media this week, with 3 separate radio appearances by staff, mentors and young people. First up, riding high on the recent launch of "You and I: Stories from the Whitelion Mentoring Program", a book showcasing some remarkable mentoring match stories, one of the featured matches, David Imber and Steven Watts, appeared on ABC radio on the Richard Stubbs show to talk about their experiences of mentoring. That same afternoon, Mark Watt appeared on 3CR talking about all Whitelion programs and promoting the 10 year anniversary Gala Ball on 14th November. And finally, Josh Spiller, a mentee from Geelong, starred on the airwaves on 94.7 The Pulse: Roads to Recovery show, with Mentoring Team Leader Allison Trethowan on Tuesday 27th October.

The week will culminate in a visit to the zoo by all Whitelion Victorian Mentoring programs, thanks to the Victorian Youth Mentoring Alliance providing free tickets for mentors and young people. This will be a great chance for mentors and young people involved with Whitelion around the state to get together and enjoy a fantastic day out together.

Book Launch - You and I; Stories from the Whitelion Mentoring Program

Sep 12, 2009

Book_You___I___book_image.JPG

On Saturday 12th September 2009 the Whitelion Mentoring Program successfully launched a book titled "You and I; Stories from the Whitelion Mentoring Program" at Luna Park. The much anticipated event saw over 130 young people, friends, family, mentors, and supporters of Whitelion gather together to celebrate this wonderful collaboration which showcases and celebrates the positive effect of mentoring on young people's lives. One of the matches appearing in the book, Josh and Roger, shared some of their story with the guests in a lively and heartfelt chat about their experience of their relationship together. Sibella Stern, author and coordinator of the book's production spoke about the motivation for writing the book and what it meant for all involved. Robyn Miller, Principal Practitioner of the Department of Human Services Children, Youth and Families division, and Whitelion Board member, spoke passionately to a captivated crowd of the benefits of mentoring for high risk young people. Greg Camm, CEO of Superpartners (book print sponsor) later presented a copy of the book to each mentor and young person who had given their time and shared their stories to make the book come to life, and it was wonderful to see them standing in front of the crowd, so proud of their contribution.

Once the formalities were over, attendees moved on to enjoy free rides supplied by Luna Park as part of their partnership with Whitelion.

Special thanks to our MC for the day Deb Dalziel and Whitelion Mentor, for doing a wonderful job with proceedings; photographer Jacqui Brown for producing such beautiful photos for the book; Tarryn Letty for book design/layout; and most of all to Sibella Stern for making the book a reality.

Whitelion's work acknowledged on ABC's Four Corner's program - Kids Doing Time

Aug 24, 2009

Four_Corners___Kids_doing_time_Image.bmpWhitelion recently appeared in an episode of ABC's Four Corner's as part of a program that looked at the Youth Justice systems in New South Wales and Victoria. Whitelion was featured as an organisation that makes a real difference to the lives of young people who have experienced extreme disadvantage, and who are at risk of being locked up.

"This program was a reminder that there are aspects of our lives that we all take for granted - our jobs, our friends, the things that give us stability and support. Seeing Young People on screen talking frankly about their tough life experiences showed plainly just how disconnected from the community kids in the Out of Home Care and Youth Justice systems are. Whitelion provides Young People with both these important opportunities and has been doing so for ten years."  Mark Watt, CEO, Whitelion.

In our tenth anniversary year your support, financial or otherwise, is more important than ever - it will ensure Whitelion remains in Young People's lives to help them grow into the future.

Wayne Carey And Palm Beach Currumbin Lions Donate $5000 To Whitelion

Jun 21, 2009

tn_Wayne_Carey_donation.jpgWayne Carey's much-hyped comeback to football ended before it began when he tore his calf muscle in the opening minutes of a QAFL division two game on June 21.

However the real reason for his comeback was an overwhelming success.

Carey took on the challenge to raise money for Australian charity Whitelion. Today he was pleased to present Whitelion CEO Mark Watt with a cheque for $5000. The funds will be used to provide mentors, jobs and support to help at-risk young people partaking in Whitelion's initiatives.

Carey donated his match fee and the Palm Beach Currumbin Lions agreed to donate a percentage of the games gate receipts.

Carey has hinted that another game may on the cards.

"I decided to support Whitelion because they work with kids who have had it tough growing up and Whitelion provides them with mentors, jobs and much needed support. I just wanted to be able to help get the 'word out' about Whitelion's work with disadvantaged youth." Carey said.

Whitelion CEO Mark Watt said he is extremely grateful to Carey for his support of Whitelion.

"I know Wayne was disappointed for not providing the crowd more value for money after agreeing to the comeback, but youth involved in Whitelion's programs are the real winners here," Watt said.

Whitelion is an Australian charity which works with at-risk young people providing them with role modeling, mentoring and employment support.

Many of Whitelion's young people have been disconnected from society due to abuse, neglect, drug addiction or poverty.

ROOS Get Whitelion Fever

May 24, 2009

kangaroos_logo.jpgWhitelion is pleased to announce a new partnership with the North Melbourne Football club.

Dean Laidley has become an official ambassador. A number of North Melbourne players will also be involved in Whitelion's programs, including the Custodial Role Model initiative.

North Melbourne and Whitelion announced the partnership at the Old Melbourne Gaol, where Whitelion will hold its largest annual fundraiser, Bail Out, on 29th May.

North Melbourne coach Dean Laidley said he was excited about working with a charity that gave so many opportunities to young disadvantaged people. "Whitelion do an outstanding job working with young people who are at risk or involved in the youth justice and out-of-home care systems," Laidley said.

"I was involved when I was playing and it was something I really enjoyed, so when the opportunity came up for myself and our players to get involved we jumped at it.

"It's an opportunity for our club to make a really positive contribution to the community."

Whitelion co-founder and former Carlton footballer Glenn Manton said the association with North Melbourne would be a terrific influence for the young people involved in Whitelion's programs.

Whitelion helps to support the youth effected by the Victorian bush fires

Feb 13, 2009

Well who can say they haven't been affected by the unprecedented tragedy in Victoria over the last week? Our thoughts and wishes go out to all those that have been affected. We'd also like to acknowledge the continued efforts of the CFA and the various volunteers still tirelessly supporting the victims.

Our first instinct, after the shock of this disaster, was how we could assist to ensure these kids could be kids again. It's obvious this tragic event has deeply affected Australians, and that's why we've spent last week helping youth in the bushfire zone.

Immediate Response: Whitelion role models attended Whittlesea only days after the fires and spent time talking with kids and adults about their experiences. Small workshops were run with the young people to keep them occupied over the first few days.

We heard some amazing survival stories and terribly sad stories. Adults just wanted to talk and share their stories with somebody other than the media.

Whitelion ran a basic drumming workshop, allowing young kids aged from 4 - 12 years, to bang on buckets and make some noise. The noise drew other young people into the relief centre. For parents, seeing their children smiling and enjoying the drums was a welcome distraction. There were also discussions about musical instruments in homes that no longer existed in lives that will be changed forever.

We then spent some time with teenagers and kicked the football around. We listened to their stories, each one so personal and horrifying. It made us think of the long road ahead as their emotions start to catch up with the reality of the facts. How can Whitelion continue to help these young people affected by the fires?

Short term: Whitelion has partnered with Whittlesea Council Youth Services to provide activities out-of-school hours in a marquee set up as a youth space.

Long term: Whitelion hopes to continue this relationship by using the same role models to attend the schools affected by the fires with its ROAR Program.

It is really hard to comprehend the stories we have heard and the devastation of communities we have seen, but our thoughts stay with all especially the young people. We extend a big thank you to the many role models who have generously volunteered their time to visit the affected communities.

Any money donated to help facilitate these Whitelion initiatives would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to help and /or become a support partner, please contact Luke Mitchell on 03 9389 4420 or luke@whitelion.asn.au

Team Building and Self Discovery on Camp

Aug 11, 2008

This year's Youth Muster Camp was attended by almost 60 participants and proved a great success for young people, mentors and staff. Young Lions facilitated activities and through commitment and support, demonstrated they are excellent leaders and role models to all young people.

The scavenger hunt activity was a challenging experience, but highlighted collaboration and teamwork within the groups. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the Circus activity despite there being a few tumbles. The theatre sports showed we have a few hidden talents within the Whitelion family and in line with camp tradition, the final night ended with a bang ? the concert performance! Overall, the camp left many people inspired to make their own pledge to do something that relates to the camp theme 'courage, respect, connect and grow'.

Youth development camps encourage and promote involvement in fun, quality activities and training that allow young people to explore and realise their own potential. For information on our camps or corporate attendance, please contact Youth Programs Team Leader Amber Griffiths on 03 9389 4393.

Top Cops launch Whitelion Bail Out

Apr 04, 2008

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon, and Assistant Commissioner (Region 1), Gary Jamieson, dealt out some social justice at the Old Melbourne Gaol's City Watch House today (3 April), all in aid of the launch of the Whitelion Bail Out 2008 helping young people at risk.

Today's activities, at the century old City Watch House Old Melbourne Gaol, also involved youths involved in the Whitelion program, along with their mentors and employers, and Glenn Manton, co-founder of Whitelion.

Bail Out Launch 030408 013_1.jpg

Ms Nixon said: "The Victorian Justice system has certainly come a long way in the past 50 years. Today there is more of a focus on intervention and rehabilitation, especially when there are young people involved."

Whitelion is a great example of this, as they give young people the best chance to break the 'cycle of discouragement' through positive role modelling, mentoring and employment, and the opportunity to build positive lives for themselves as part of our community," said Ms Nixon.

Whitelion's target groups are among the most disadvantaged and marginalised people in our community and have difficulty in accessing education, health care, accommodation, employment, income support and other support services.

These young people have often had horrific life experiences with a 'cycle of discouragement' that is very hard to break. Often, if this cycle is not broken, some young people become habitual offenders in our community and spend the majority of their young lives behind bars.

Rare Australian Coins Exhibition to support Whitelion

Jun 21, 2007

KOOKAS IN THE CATHEDRAL
21 - 25 MAY, 2007

The Cathedral Room
ANZ Gothic Bank
Cnr Collins and Queen Streets, Melbourne
10.00am - 4.00pm daily

Rare Australian coin dealer Coinworks, in conjunction with ANZ  will stage a five-day exhibition of one of this country's most significant (and valuable) coin sets - the remarkable 1.4 million dollar 'Kookaburra Collection' of historic square Australian coins - in Melbourne from May 21 to May 25.

Acquired by an anonymous Australian collector, with the assistance of Coinworks' Belinda Downie, this is the only time this unique set of thirteen coins will be shown to the public, before being locked in a vault for posterity.

The exclusive exhibition, by arrangement with ANZ will be held in Melbourne's historic Great Hall (Cathedral Room) of the former Stock Exchange of Melbourne.

The Kookas exhibition brings to life a tumultuous period in Australia's history, in the years following World War I, when the young nation's leaders considered, for the first time, introducing a uniquely Australian range of coins. The novel square designs would feature a laughing kookaburra on every coin.

tn_kooka1_1.jpg

The coins never went into production, but the few that were produced as trial coins are exceptionally rare, exceedingly valuable and have assumed an iconic prominence in the rare coin industry. This is the only set of its kind.

The 'Kookas in the Cathedral' collection will be officially unveiled at a gala VIP evening in The Cathedral Room on Monday 21 May by Melbourne's Lord Mayor Rt. Hon John So.
Due to the value of the collection the coins are being showcased in a high-security museum display case (similar to that used to display Ned Kelly's mask at the State Library of Victoria). Supporting the display will be historical information to impart the historical significance and rarity of each of the coins.  This display will have wide appeal for collectors, students of history, schools and the general public.

SO SMALL - BUT WORTH SO MUCH THIS MAY BE THE ONLY TIME YOU'LL EVER SEE THEM

Nominal gold coin donations upon entry will be donated to Whitelion to help our work with young people.

ANZ's Shane Freeman is bailing out with his team!

Jun 21, 2007

Whitelion thanks ANZ for all the work that we do together and the support that ANZ give Whitelion. ANZ works in partnership with Whitelion in a number of ways, including: assisting young people to develop their career skills, providing mentors, employing young people participating in Whitelion programs, developing Whitelion staff through ANZ training programs and by partnering in fundraising.

"One of the key tipping points for young people involved in Whitelion programs is their prospects for employment.  We're working closely with Whitelion to help them become aware of what options they have at ANZ by providing participants with vocational assessments.  Our People Capital staff conduct one-on-one assessments, discussing their interests and aptitude, where they are likely to succeed, and help identify career opportunities and how they can go about pursuing them.

"Whilst this is not a stretch from the career development work we do every day for our people at ANZ, we believe we're in a good position to offer something valuable. It also provides a unique development opportunity and experience for our People Capital team.

"We're also pleased to say that we have offered permanent employment for one of the first participants to receive training at ANZ. It's early days and there's still more work to be done, we feel that we're off to a good start," Mr Freeman said.

Mr Freeman is also personally involved in the Whitelion Bailout fundraiser which will be held in May.  Along with a handful of other participants, Mr Freeman has committed himself to raising at least $10,000 or risk remaining in 'lock up'.
