Team building, self-confidence, overcoming challenges…and a giant swing!
Oct 05, 2017
Whitelion’s National Camp in September 2017 brought together young people, mentors, volunteers and staff from Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales for a weekend jam-packed with fun and educational activities.
Participants developed skills in team building, self-confidence, communication and overcoming challenges through a range of activities; these included sports and other games, mindfulness training, a body awareness workshop and, most fun of all, a giant swing.
The Young Lions Advocacy and Ambassador Program (YAAP) volunteers also launched the One Letter One Voice Campaign at the National Camp. In the medium of their choice, including words (songs, written word, voice recording) or visual means (image, drawing, video), young people expressed what they believed participants could do to support them, and what this support means to them.
The campaign aims to give the young people Whitelion works with a voice. They are able to give specific feedback to help improve Whitelion programs or they are able to reflect on what Whitelion means to them and the impact it has made on their lives. YAAP volunteers also presented One Letter One Voice to Whitelion staff at the Victoria Roadshow, where all Victorian staff are informed of upcoming events, and to 450 attendees at the yearly Whitelion AFL Finals Lunch.
National Camp 2017 was a very meaningful, inspiring and life-affirming experience for all involved. We look forward to what next year’s Camp will bring.
