Tasmanian program releasing futures in the justice system.
Sep 25, 2018
Whitelion Tasmania commenced its Release My Future program in early 2018 to support at least 20 young people to engage in education during, and post, incarceration.
During the first five months of the program, eight participants have been inducted into Release My Future, with three having now been released from prison. Prior to release, all three participants were engaged with some form of education whilst serving their sentences.
The program aims to keep participants engaged in education for a minimum of three months post release, with Whitelion providing support as participants navigate through some of the challenges of life after incarceration.
Such challenges may include a lack of stable and secure housing, addiction and mental health issues, and low numeracy and literacy. Whitelion can help address these challenges through assisting participants with accommodation through referrals to supported housing facilities and encouraging participants to engage with alcohol and other drug services whilst in prison. Additionally, the program includes other practical strategies such as providing participants with a mobile phone on release to strengthen connectedness.
In coming months, a further 10 – 15 participants will commence with Release My Future, with the majority of new participants serving shorter sentences of six months or less. Two current program participants are due for release in the near future, which will include continuation of education with support from Whitelion.
Release My Future is funded by the Tasmanian Government until 31 July 2019.
